One of the smallest touchscreen smartphones on the planet comes from the world’s number 3 mobile phone maker
LG Electronics. Sporting a monolithic touchscreen form on a slim minimalist body measuring 102 x 47.6 x 10.6mm, the
LG Mini GD880 is no mini version of any existing smartphone as most other handsets with the “mini” branding would suggest. Rather it just makes an emphatic point about its mini dimensions that pushes the envelope on what miniaturization is on a full-featured touchscreen smartphone.
Big Features on a Small Body
The LG Mini GD880 squeezes into a compact and slim body the features we’ve taken for granted in upscale smartphones that have grown flatulent and obese over the years. For starters, you still get 3.2 inch TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen with Wide VGA (480 x 854) resolution and 256k color depth on a screen that almost bleeds to edges of the handset, thanks to a narrow bezel framing that makes maximum use of the handset’s width.
There’s only sufficient space at the top to make room of its secondary VGA videocall camera and a bottom space for aesthetic balance. The screen gets a multitouch data input technology, an ambient light sensor, a gravity accelerometer for UI auto rotate, proximity sensor for touchscreen auto-off when in a call and gets covered with a scratch resistant surface.
It’s a dual band UMTS (900/ 2100) with and HSUPA at 2 MBps and HSDPA at 7.2 MBps on the 3G network. It is also a quad band GSM (850/ 900/ 1800/ 1900) with class 10 GPRS/EDGE data speeds on the 2G network. Local data connectivity gets hotspot support with WiFi 802.11b/g with DLNA while data syncing and transfers is served via microUSB 2.0 and Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP. A GPS receiver having A-GPS support serves its SatNav functionality.
Its digicam gets a 5-megapixel resolution with autofocus, face/smile detection, geo tagging from its GPS and image stabilization. There’s also VGA video recording with 15fps. Its 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen enjoys multitouch input support, an ambient light sensor for auto brightness, a gravity accelerometer for UI auto rotate convenience, and a scratch resistant glass surface. Its multitouch capability includes gesture control and pinch-zoom when going though images thumbnailed in its gallery section.
There’s an FM stereo radio with RDS as well as the expected media players for the popular video and audio file formats which include DivX/Xvid video codecs. Stereo listening gets a boost with Dolby Mobile using wired headsets from its 3.5 mm headphone jack and Bluetooth A2DP support for wireless stereo earphones.
Asa social networking smartphone, the LG Mini GD880 is preloaded with Social Network Connect for automatically keeping in touch among your online friends. It also gets the Social Network Feed that automatically updates Twitter and Facebook right from your homescreen as well as the Social Address Book containing your SNS contacts incorporated into the phonebook
The
LG Mini GD880 is blessed with generous 330 MB of internal storage with up to 1000 phonebook entries and fields and gets a hot-swappable microSD that supports up to 32 GB external memory. Its standard li-ion battery when fully charged powers up the handset for up to 7 hours of talk time on 2G and 330 hours on standby.
