LG Mini GD880 Review

In brief
The LG Mini GD880 manages to cram in a number of user-friendly features into its small frame.

Look and Feel
You probably won’t be surprised to read that the LG Mini GD880 is a small smartphone. In fact, it is the littlest, thinnest mobile on the market at present – with a 3.2 inch touchscreen, that is. Looking at the Mini, it is impressive LG managed to squeeze the screen on as the LG GD510 Pop, which has a similar overall size, only has a 3 inch screen.

Keeping the mobile as trim and sleek as possible, there are no physical buttons on the front of the LG Mini GD880. The touchscreen runs close to the phone’s edges and is protected by a scratch-resistant glass surface, to help you keep your phone smooth for longer. The inbuilt accelerometer lets you turn the screen on its side, auto-rotating the interface accordingly.

Compared to other smartphones like the iPhone and Google Nexus One, the screen on the LG Mini GD880 seems small. But that’s the point, really – this smartphone is all about portability. And the screen may be relatively small but its high definition display ensures you can view photos and browse the internet enjoyably.

Special features
Social networking is a big feature on the LG Mini GD880. Not only does the phone come with applications pre-loaded including Facebook and Twitter, but the handset has a Social Network Connect option for showing all your updates, photos and messages on your home screen. The social aspect of the phone is reflected in the contacts list too and the Social Address Book shows you the updates related to each contact.

The platform is LG’s own S-Class which has a fun and workable interface with a 3D cube displayed on your home screen. This cube has four sides, for all your widgets, your shortcuts to different areas like music, web browser and contacts. This OS is also found on the LG GM750 and KM900.

If you are a fan of multitasking, the LG Mini GD880 supports this. You can listen to music as you write an email, for example, or play a game as you listen to the FM radio. The Mini comes with Document viewer for opening and editing Office documents including Word and Excel, and you can expand the internal memory to up to 32GB using a microSD card so storage is plentiful on this handset.

The Mini houses a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and face detection, although sadly no flash. There is, however, a video option and a second camera for making video calls on the move.

If you are looking for a small touchscreen mobile with good social networking integration, a decent camera and communication options which include Bluetooth, 3G and Wi-Fi, then look no further than the LG Mini GD880.
