The world’s second largest mobile phone maker Samsung brings up some waves in the mobile community with its first smartphone to be driven by its proprietary Bada operating system. Aptly branded the Samsung Wave S8500, the new smartphone is also the first in the industry to use the latest Bluetooth 3.0 +HS which harnesses the same WiFi 802.11 high speed protocol.

Outstanding Flagship Features

Encased in an all-aluminum monoblock body with a 10.9 mm thickness, the Samsung Wave S8500 can lay claim as one of the thinnest touchscreen smartphones on the planet. You get fast broadband speeds with its dual band 3G coverage with HSDPA and HSUPA data connectivity speeds of 7.2 Mbps and 2 Mbps, respectively. It is also your quad band GSM for unhampered international roaming on the 2G/GSMnetwork and come with class 10 GPRS/EDGE data connectivity.

Local data connectivity comes with hotspot support from its 54 Mbps WiFi 802.11 b/g/n. The world-first Bluetooth 3.0 + HS can stream data at up to 24 Mbps on its wireless local data connection over the WiFi protocol. You also get microUSB 2.0 for wired data synching up to 60 Mbps. SatNav gets an integrated GS receiver with A-GPS and gets preloaded with Google Maps 3.0 and a digital compass.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon processor is not alone in the 1 GHz world. The Samsung Wave S8500 is powered by a 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 engine with a 512 MB ROM. It gets a 2 GB onboard user memory that can be expansion up to 32 GB with its microSD slot. The Bada OS gets the TouchWiz 3.0 UI and offers customizable menu table with widgets that enable instant and seamless social networking integration. It also features email and IM integration with your phonebook.

A 3.3-inch display with Wide-VGA resolution and 16 million colors may look typical but it harnesses Super AMOLED screen technology with dramatically higher contrast ratios thanks to the absence of backlighting common in LCDs. Power efficiency is enhanced up to 40% allowing for a more generous talk of 8.5 hours and standby times of 450 hours given the same 1500 mAh li-ion battery rating. The screen comes with a scratch-resistant anti-smudge tempered glass surface.

Imaging on the Samsung Wave S8500 gets center stage with an autofocus digital camera that boasts of a 5-megapixel resolution, LED flash, face and smile/blink detection and geo-tagging from its GPS receiver. Its video recording is likewise outstanding with a gorgeous video-lighted high definition 720p resolution. In addition, its façade gets a secondary VGA videocall camera.

Mobile entertainment is similarly outstanding starting with a stereo FM radio with RDS and FM broadcast recording. Then comes the usual media playback for audio in the MP3, WAV, WMA and eAAC file formats and video in the MP4, H.263/H.264, WMV including Xvid and DivX file formats. Stereo listening gets enhanced with Samsung’s own DNSe audio enhancer for surround sound effects of stereo widening. Its 3.5mm headphone jack allows you to use your favorite high fidelity headsets while its A2DP profile support allows wireless stereo earphones over Bluetooth.
